Over\u00a0the last couple of months, we\u2019ve spoken\u00a0to\u00a0a number of\u00a0professional photographers from\u00a0all\u00a0around the world,\u00a0asking them for some of their personal\u00a0tips on achieving\u00a0perfect travel photography. They\u2019ve offered up\u00a0advice on\u00a0everything from\u00a0capturing\u00a0specific locations,\u00a0to\u00a0when\u00a0and where\u00a0to take\u00a0pictures,\u00a0to\u00a0their\u00a0own\u00a0personal\u00a0tips for\u00a0getting the most out of\u00a0natural and manmade\u00a0photography opportunities.<\/p>\n

On this\u00a0particular\u00a0occasion, we\u2019ve spoken to the incredibly talented photographer and cinematographer\u00a0Tomasz\u00a0Huczek<\/a>,\u00a0whose taken some\u00a0breath-taking images\u00a0from around the world, and has agreed to\u00a0let us in on a few of his\u00a0secrets to\u00a0capturing\u00a0the island of\u00a0Cyprus at its best.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a place to take some great holiday photographs,\u00a0Cyprus –\u00a0with its wealth of\u00a0ancient history,\u00a0endlessly stretching beaches, stunning mountain ranges and famed wine-growing regions –\u00a0is an excellent choice.\u00a0No matter where you\u2019re staying,\u00a0the type of camera you\u00a0have, or the length of your holiday, armed with Tomasz\u2019s advice, you can be sure that you\u2019ll end up taking some\u00a0photographs\u00a0to\u00a0be proud of.<\/p>\n

\"Amathus<\/p>\n

We started by asking\u00a0Tomasz\u00a0what he\u00a0looks for in an area to photograph.<\/h3>\n

One of the most important aspects of landscape photography for me is composition. What I usually do is try to compose the frame in a way\u00a0that\u00a0there\u2019s some sort of a subject in the foreground, like a\u00a0rock or\u00a0<\/em>a pier. It adds more depth to the picture and leads our eyes to the background.\u00a0 \u00a0 In the picture below,\u00a0the posts are in the foreground and they lead the eyes towards the\u00a0centre\u00a0of the frame,\u00a0revealing the sea in the background:<\/p>\n

How do you get the best out of ruins like Kourion & Amathus?<\/h3>\n

In places like that, I prefer to avoid including people in the frame. Often\u00a0it means I have to visit such places\u00a0off-season, or at times of day when they\u2019re a little quieter. Another idea is to try to capture the ruins at night with the stars in the sky. It\u2019s quite easy in Cyprus as the sky is clear most of the time.<\/p>\n

What about Aphrodite\u2019s rock; any advice for people trying to take great photos?<\/h3>\n

What I always look for is to try to capture the commonly visited\u00a0places\u00a0in an unusual way. This means that I will try to visit the place during\u00a0\u2018golden hour\u2019,\u00a0when the light is the most beautiful. I will\u00a0also look for different perspectives, like in the picture below.<\/p>\n

The rocks in the foreground add some depth and create\u00a0a\u00a0less common view\u00a0of\u00a0Aphrodite\u2019s Rock in the background.<\/p>\n

How do you go about photographing the Cypriot coastline?<\/h3>\n

The coastline in Cyprus is quite diverse and what I like the most is the\u00a0cliffs that you can find in Cape\u00a0Greco, or the ones near Pissouri. Captured on a windy day they create a very dramatic effect!<\/p>\n

You often take landscape shots at sunrise\u00a0& sunset; how do you get the most out of these times of day?<\/h3>\n

Unfortunately,\u00a0there\u2019s no perfect formula for that. When I want to capture a specific place I keep going there over and over again until the weather cooperates and gives me beautiful light. When this happens,\u00a0I usually have 15-20 minutes to take the pictures. This means that there\u2019s not that much time to set up the camera, find the desired composition and grab a few long-exposure shots (which can last up to couple of minutes each). Having a composition in mind beforehand helps\u00a0with this\u00a0a lot.<\/p>\n

What tips would you give to someone trying to capture rolling landscapes like the Troodos Mountains?<\/h3>\n

The mountains look best when captured with the sun behind our back or from the side. This helps\u00a0enhance the structure and the texture.\u00a0Adding the foreground element, as before, adds depth, creates many layers and builds the perspective.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your approach when taking photos of farmland\u00a0&\u00a0rural areas?<\/h3>\n

The general idea is the same – I try to find some distinctive elements, patterns or textures. The sun\u00a0plays an important role but its placement has to be different than in the coastline photos. The proper position of the sun can enhance the shape of the land by painting the shadows and highlights.\u00a0As\u00a0usual,\u00a0I would try to find some foreground element to balance the composition and create more depth (my\u00a0favourite\u00a0word!).<\/p>\n

If you wanted to encapsulate Cyprus in a photo, where would you go?<\/h3>\n

For a lot of\u00a0people,\u00a0Cyprus is\u00a0thought of primarily as a\u00a0touristic destination.\u00a0However, having lived there for a few years, what I appreciate the most are the natural unpopulated areas. The first place that comes to my mind is Akamas. There are so many beautiful spots and endless possibilities to capture,\u00a0so I think I would go there!<\/p>\n
