A guide to resorts in Cyprus

Cyprus is a simply breath-taking island nation, with a huge number of great places to visit. Whilst famous for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and scenery, the country has so much more to offer, including well-preserved historical sites, authentic Mediterranean culture and some vibrant towns and cities. As there’s so much out there to be discovered, we’ve listed 5 of the best places to visit when staying in Cyprus.

Paphos

Paphos is Cyprus’ capital city, and an essential visit if you want to see the best that Cyprus has to offer. The city is crammed with history; the highlight of which is the UNESCO protected Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, which is home to a huge range of Roman treasures, including well-preserved mosaic floors from Roman villas. Also, be sure to visit The Tombs of the Kings, an ancient burial ground for the high figures of Cypriot society, which was carved out of solid rock, as well as Paphos Castle. It’s said that the Greek God Aphrodite rose from the sea of Paphos, and you can visit the spot, which is marked by the striking Aphrodite’s Rock, found at a beautiful coastal location. If you’re willing to travel a little further, take a trip to the Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery, an interesting relic surrounded by great scenery. If you’re looking for a beach when staying in Paphos, you can’t go wrong with the soft white sand and gentle sea of the horseshoe shaped Coral Bay, which is around 6km from the centre.

Limassol

There is absolutely loads to do in Limassol. Like Paphos, the city is home to some great historical sites, like the medieval museum at Limassol Castle, the ancient city of Amathus, and the archaeological museum. There are also several blue flag beaches around Limassol, as well as a zoo, making it the perfect place to visit with children of any age. Don’t miss the thriving Marina, where there are some lovely waterside restaurants and shops, whilst - If you are looking for a little excitement - why not visit Fasouri Watermania, Cyprus’ biggest waterpark. The attraction is home to everything from lazy rivers and paddle boats, to a kamikaze slide and wave pool, as well as a massage parlour if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience! There are also a wide range of water sports on offer in Limassol, from diving and snorkelling, to surfing, water skiing and yachting. With such a range of things to do, the only dilemma when you visit Limassol is likely to be how many activities you can squeeze into each day!

Protaras 

Protaras is known for having great weather and even better beaches. The area which brought this previously small resort onto the holidaymaker’s map was Fig Tree Beach, which features white sand, clear, shallow water and a small island which can be swam to just off the coast. If you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter to relax in the Cypriot sun, you can’t go wrong with Green Bay beach, which is surrounded by attractive sandstone platforms, which make a great place to lie out and enjoy some peace and quiet. Another excellent beach around Protaras is Sirena Bay, a secluded area which has an amazing, relaxed atmosphere and offers amazing views over the sea, as well as the chance to enjoy music, drinks and good food. Protaras is also home to a number of sea caves which are wonderful for exploring, in addition to some excellent scenery for hiking and a number of bars and pubs which stay open late into the night, where you can relax after a hard day’s lounging in the sun!

Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa is one of Cyprus’ premier resorts, and for good reason. Found on the southern coast of Cyprus, it’s – like so many areas of Cyprus – home to breath-taking sandy beaches and nature, as well as a place to enjoy almost guaranteed great weather in the summer months. If you’re looking for a super beach, then you really can’t go wrong with Nissi Beach which, whilst often busy, is incredibly scenic, with clear water, white sand and blue flag status. Whilst the resort is undoubtedly popular with tourists from around the world, as one of the world’s premier destinations for a clubbing holiday, there is so much more than the nightlife to enjoy on a visit to Ayia Napa. The nearby Cape Greco National Park is truly one of a kind, featuring astonishing nature trails through pine forests as well as cliffs, caves and views. The highlight of the National Park is undoubtedly the Cape Greco Tabletop, a large limestone feature which towers over Cyprus’ crystal clear coastal waters, whilst the six thousand year old Neolithic settlement is a close second place.

Troodos Mountains

The Troodos Mountains are an area where wonderful nature meets authentic culture, and the scent of tall pine trees pine fills the air. The National Park covers a large area of central Cyprus, and is the perfect destination for hiking, cycling, running and exploring, whilst enjoying a little peace and quiet whilst on holiday in Cyprus. You’ll find monasteries, vineyards and traditional villages throughout the Troodos Mountains area, and will be sure to enjoy the feeling of discovering ‘the real Cyprus’. The area is home to a staggering array of wildlife and nature, and has four separate protected nature reserves, home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. If you fancy a real challenge, why not venture up Mount Olympus?
