The sun-kissed island of Cyprus is a place of serene calm and beauty, and is known for its cloudless skies and endless stretches of golden sand, gently lapped at by the warm and pleasant Mediterranean Sea. As such, it’s no wonder that according to legend, Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. The combination of this beautiful landscape and idyllic weather, as well as the presence of some first-class courses, mean that Cyprus shows all the signs of becoming one of the world’s finest golfing destinations.
For years, golfers have been turning to Cyprus for a fresh golf challenge in a stunning and relaxing setting. Although there are a number of low-key courses that litter the island, there are in truth, a handful of just five main courses that offer the very best golfing experience in the Mediterranean. What follows is a brief introduction to these courses, and for any golfers due a holiday to Cyprus soon, these great courses are an absolute must.
Paphos is the latest destination on the golfing map, due in part to the beautiful surroundings, as well fantastic facilities at the clubs themselves – as mentioned, the excellent year-round climate certainly also helps!
Situated amongst the peaceful landscaped hills, most, if not all of the courses boast some spectacular costal views, and are far enough from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas, but still close enough for easy access. There are four world-class golf courses in the Paphos region, with a few more currently under construction.
The prestigious Eléa Estate at the heart of south-western Cyprus is home to the legendary Eléa Golf Club. This world-class Par 71 course was designed by one of golf’s greatest; Sir Nick Faldo, and features numerous natural obstacles, as well amazing views of the Mediterranean. The combination of fantastic golf and a meticulous attention to detail will ensure that Eléa will quickly become a destination of choice for the world’s golf enthusiasts.
Aphrodite Hills is a multi award winning golf, leisure and real estate development; with an 18-hole course that offers a challenge comparable to championship standards of golf. Now we all have varying levels of golfing ability, but at Aphrodite, you don’t have to be a world-class player to enjoy their world-class facilities.
There’s a practice range, four target greens, short game practice facilities, three academy holes, as well two resident professionals who offer pre booked instruction, and finally, a large clubhouse with a bar and terraced restaurant that overlooks the green.
Should you tackle the course itself you’ll be treated to one of the most spectacular par-3s in all of Europe. The signature par 3 found on the 7th hole has players traversing a canyon, before (hopefully) landing on the large green that’s nestled on all sides by groves of olive trees.
Located 18 kilometres east of Paphos lies the aptly named Secret Valley Golf Club. Opened in 1996, and designed by Lacoyos Lacoyou, this scenic course is surrounded by majestic hills, and provides excellent views of the nearby Sty Kingly rock formations. The course itself measures 5,904m in total, plays to a par 71 and is open for everybody with reservations. Should you not have a certified handicap, you’re permitted to play after noon (depending on availability).
As for facilities, Secret Valley has what you’d expect in terms of locker rooms, bar, restaurant, and pro shop, as well as fantastic practice areas, and buggy and trolley rental.
This championship standard course is situated in the grounds of a 12th century monastery, and its tranquil and mesmerising setting make for an unforgettable golfing experience. Throughout this par 71, 18 hole course, you’ll do battle with fairways closely surrounded by mature and imposing trees, as well a number of challenging water obstacles.
Originally designed in 1994, it is the oldest course in Cyprus (this course was formally known as Tsada), and has benefitted from a number of enhancements throughout the years by the world-renowned Mackenzie & Ebert course architects. Aside from the incredible course, there are also practice facilities, as well as an exceptional clubhouse for visitors to make use of.
So there you have it; some of the very best golf courses which Cyprus has to offer.
