Honeymoon in Malta for some Hollywood glamour

Moonlight glints in your hair while you stroll the sandy beach arm in arm. The pressure to choose the perfect honeymoon break can be difficult, after all, this is one of the most important trips of your life and you want it to live up to the dream. Many people look to the usual suspects when booking such as The Maldives or Australia, but Malta is a surprising honeymoon gem and the spot of choice for none other than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Their visit has shown that Malta can be the height of glamour, so why not soak up a little of the Brangelina lifestyle with a honeymoon in Malta.

Relax at a romantic spa

It’s rumoured that the happy couple stayed in a glamorous five star hotel and spa; and of course a spa is a very romantic start to your honeymoon. It is odd that Malta is not more well-known as a spa destination because there are so many top quality facilities to choose from. In fact, for such a small island the spa-to-human ratio is almost unbelievable. Most of them are attached to hotels, but there are some that are purpose built and most have a huge menu of treatments. Just breathe, and relax.

Float away together

Nothing says romance more than a secluded candlelit dinner for two in a beautiful setting, and guess what? Malta has loads of wonderful places to eat. Rumour has it that the glitzy couple dined at the fabulous de Mondion restaurant in Mdina, which is a wonderful city for romantic dining even on a shoestring. Also known as the ‘silent city’ the peaceful beauty that you will find there is perfect for honeymooners. Not many people realise that Malta has fine dining in the shape of the Aziamendi 100 restaurant, in Valletta, which boasts a Spanish born 3 Michelin star chef. This city is another popular choice for a romantic evening because of its stunning architecture and spectacular night time views across the harbour.

Be alone together

While Brad and Angelina were in Malta they didn’t just honeymoon, they filmed scenes for the movie, By The Sea, which was penned by Jolie. Mgarr ix-Xini has a beautifully secluded beach and this was shut down for the film shoot, but this kind of seclusion was also part of the attraction for a Hollywood super couple on honeymoon, and Malta has this in abundance. Although there are bustling cities, there are also beaches, coves and lagoons that can make you feel like you are the only two people on earth. The aforementioned Mgarr ix-Xini is just such an example and is a great out of the way beach spot. San Blas Bay is another quiet beach that is perfect for honeymooners. It is a bit of a trek to access as it can’t be approached by car, but the golden sands and rugged headlands are worth the walk. Another way to a romantic break in the beautiful, natural surroundings of the islands is to take a visit to the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino. This world famous spot has tranquil turquoise waters that conjure up images of the tropical. You can catch a ferry from Gozo to Comino and the lagoon is a great place for diving and scuba, or just to share a sunset.
