Pool

First time at the hotel and we were impressed overall. The hotel is spotless in all areas. The staff are helpful and friendly. We had a side sea view. The room was a good size. Only negative was the balcony was in the shade in the afternoon. Would stay on the other side of the hotel in future. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast was good with all the usual food. All well presented and the staff regularly top up the food and clear the tables promptly. It’s very busy at breakfast times. Plenty of restaurants and bars nearby without having to go to the old town in the evening. Approximately 20 minute walk to reach there. Only real negative is the lift’s. Only 2 and they are very small.

Spotless

We stayed in the hotel for 7 nights and were quite happy with the hotel.  The things that made us happy were the following.
The location is quite good even it is about 3 km from the city center.  There are many restaurants close by and shopping also.
The staff were first class and always greeting us with a smile and tried to help.
The breakfast had quite good selection and even if it was quite busy then the service was excellent and you are always quite quick to find a table.
The facilities of the hotel was also fantastic with the pool area, snooker table, kids playroom and bar area.  Someone was always rearranging the teddy bears in the kdis playroom.  Not sure if was a member of the staff or not but it made fun videos to send back home.

Now for the things I did not like.
First and by far the largest was the beds.  They are really hard and I did not sleep very comfortably, did not get a long sleep during the nights.
It was very difficult to book a time in the spa as it was always very busy.  In the seven days we stayed we were not able to find a time.
And finally there is a safe in the room but you have to pay extra to use it.  WHY.  It is such a small thing and propably a very small part of their revenue.  Why not have it included in the room rate.

I am not sure I would stay again because of the bed.  If it was not for the bed then the hotel would get a five star "excellent" review from me.

Great service but not the best of sleeps

First time in Madeira and if we go again this is were we would stay. We love walking so if you want to get to the old town it’s about a 5 mile walk there and back - so perfect location for us. The hotel is just so lovely, the people who work there, from those cleaning the rooms, those making sure the very busy breakfast is run so well and reception are quite simply wonderful. Our room was good, very comfortable bed and pillows and exceptionally clean. The only downside was we had no sun (room 704) so we know next time to ask for a room on the opposite side of where we were, in our opinion would be worth paying extra. Overall just fantastic-we had a very unnecessary 9.5 delay on the way home and the hotel offered everyone a complimentary lunch on them ! Fantastic when jet2 only  gave us €10 per person for lunch 🤔so would 100% this beautiful hotel. Thank you Alto Lido we will return

Just wonderful

I have visited this hotel a few times and I love it. This only thing that needs improving is their entertainment. It is the same every year and it is abit boring. It is mostly singers/ bands every night. You should also take your own mugs with you.

Entertainment

Just arrived home after a 7 week stay at this fabulous hotel. I have been staying in Madeira to break up the winter for the last 17 years and this was my first time at the Alto Lido. My biggest regret is that I didn't find this years ago!!! I stayed on floor 14 with a side sea view on the 'sunset' side it looked down over the new Savoy hotel gardens with a beautiful view across the ocean. I could have stayed there all day looking at it but of course there is always something to keep you out and about. The room wasn't massive but fulfilled my requirements. The bed and pillows were perfect and there was minimum noise. Everything was spotless and Lucia who cleans on that floor was an absolute sweetheart. She obviously loves her job and could often be heard singing or humming to herself as she worked. She greeted me every morning with a beaming smile and a cheery greeting. What an asset to the hotel she is. The whole hotel is spotless and teeming with staff that make it run efficiently. With a few exceptions they are all friendly and helpful. There are plenty of comfy sitting areas where you can relax and have a coffee or a drink and the reception area is cool and inviting with soft furnishings and plants. I don't like to single out staff but Patricia and Christina on reception were particularly kind and helpful to me and always happy to help with any query I had and went above and beyond to make my stay a happy one.
As other people have mentioned, the restaurant can be very crowded at breakfast times and Sunday and Mondays seem to be the worst but it was always possible to find a table. I guess larger groups may be an issue but as I was on my own I never had any problems and the one time I couldn't find one, I waited in the comfy lounge and tried again. Humberto is a delight, and again made me feel special by always smiling and welcoming his guests with a cheery smile. Anyone who had a birthday was treated to a rousing rendition of 'happy birthday' and given a cake. This could happen on numerous occasions on a daily basis but was always done with gusto!!! So much choice of food that I would defy anyone not to find something they liked. Hot food and eggs and pancakes cooked to order as well as the usual hot breakfast fare. Breads, meats, fruit, cheeses, salad stuff, pasties and cereals were topped up constantly. The coffee was lovely although one machine at the bottom end of the restaurant dispensed coffee that I found undrinkable, the rest were fine. All types of tea and fruit juices were available too.
The hotel is located in a lovely area where there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. The Forum shopping centre filled with designer shops is a short walk away. The courtesy bus into Funchal is a real bonus, it is walkable but takes a good 20 mins or so. There is a supermarket close by.  
I really enjoyed my stay and was sad to leave, I am already looking to book my return for next winter.
My tip would be to pack a mug and a couple of teaspoons into your case and also some tea bags. The cups in the room are tiny and only stirrers provided. The tea bags in Madeira are insipid and tasteless but this is a universal thing rather than the hotels fault. I also added a sharp knife and some scissors into my luggage which came in very handy.

Fabulous, Fantastic and Faultless

This attractive apartment hotel is located only 2 km from Funchal city centre. All rooms and studios have full or partial Atlantic Ocean views. There is a plethora of restaurants in the vicinity, ready to serve local delicacies. There are also several shops, bars and nightclubs in the area. The beautiful beach is only 500 m from the hotel and there are public transportation links in the vicinity, ready to take guests around the island's stunning landscape.
