Why is this not rated 5 star? The hotel made my husband's 70th a truly memorable experience! One of the best hotels we have ever stayed in

Fabulous hotel

Excellent accommodation and fabulous gardens. We booked a studio room but were upgraded to a spacious apartment, with balcony and sea view. Shame that the weather was not warm enough to sit outside for much of the time. The need to use 200 characters will deter me from bothering to write any more reviews.

Stayed here for a week with my friend in the studio apartment - lots of space with living room and small kitchen that had all the appliances you would need. Included breakfast at the hotel which had lots of variety and was well stocked even during busy times, queuing at times near the end of breakfast time but staff handled it really well and queue moved quickly. Hotel was very clean and up to date in decor - credit to garden staff as the gardens are beautiful! I would go again and recommend to others!!

Great venue and superb staff… good choice of restaurants and also within walking distance of food options to suit all tastes. 

Facilities were great and pools were popular with our kids. Only downside is there is only 1 tennis court so you’ve to book well ahead but otherwise all fine.

Super staff make a super venue

We were coming to Funchal for a wedding and booked to stay at The Residence originally because it was only a short walk away from the wedding reception’s hotel up the street and we are so glad we did as it a lovely place to stay. 

We arrived late afternoon at the Porta Mare reception desk and they were helpful enough to advise how to reach The Residence’s reception using their elevators. Now the elevators in this hotel & The Residence take some getting use to, especially if you are from the UK, as they are not setup in the standard structure you would expect. This we worked out is due to the hotel being tiered and on a hill, it took us a few rides to get use to it, but it was fun getting lost for a bit. 

The Residence reception staff were lovely too and they knew my name straight away as we were the last to check in that day. They gave us a map of the site and pointed out all the relevant locations on it and advised that after 10pm we can use our room key to enter the hotel. 

Our room, 3017, at The Residence had air conditioning and was a twin bed apartment, but the beds had been pushed together. We had a little lounge, dining area and kitchen. 

The bathroom was interesting as you had a door off the lounge which led to a room with a shower, toilet, bidet and sink. This room had a second door which lead to around room that contained a shower over head bath tub, sink and door leading to the bedroom. So much space to get ready. I loved it! 

The Residence also provide you with a lovely range of bathrooms products to use, including a sawing, dental and shaving kit. Vanity set, comb, shower cap, bars of soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion. 
Our apartment also gave you lots of white towels, green spa towels, bath robes, slippers and a hair dryer. 

The bedroom had double layered curtains, which were great for keeping the sunlight out of the room, but it did have low level lighting, which isn’t ideal for doing makeup at the dressing table, but the  bathroom had plenty of mirrors and excellent lighting. 
The beds were very large, the husband and I could only just reach eachother’s finger tips when we tested the distance from eachother and they were very comfortable with two puffy pillows each.  

We didn’t use the kitchen area, but it contained all the crockery you would need. It also had a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, oven, kettle, toaster, microwave and coffee machine. 
The Residence also provided you with a kitchen welcome pack of essentials and a bottle of water. 

We had a balcony too, which you could access from the bedroom and lounge through patio doors and it featured a four seater table set and drying rack. The view of the below garden area and the ocean were fantastic! 

The swimming pools on site were lovely and the two indoors pools were lovely and warm with the main pool having access to a small outside pool with a hot tub. There were plenty of loungers on site and no one seemed to reserve them with towels as the hotel has a rule of removal after an hour. 

The onsite gardens, flowers and bird avery are a lovely feature and worth a walk round late evening or early morning. 

Evening meals weren’t included in our booking, but we chose to pay the extra €72 to eat our only required evening meal in the onsite  Alandida restaurant. 
This restaurant is a buffet style and each night is themed differently. Our night was ‘fish’ but there was plenty of different dishes and sides to choose from, and considering I’m not much of a fish eater and also pregnant I was still able to walk away full, even on ‘fish night’. 

Breakfast took place in the ‘Alandida’ restaurant too and again this was a buffet style that ranges from fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, cheese, cold meats and a full English fry up (although the sausages and bacon are quite different to what we have at home). 
You have a range of fruit juices to drink, as well as coffee, tea and even bottles of wine. 

Our evening meal, it’s beverages and tourist tax were paid for at check out. 

I would recommend this hotel/residence to anyone staying in Funchal. Thank you for taking care of us for a few days.
