We took our good friends, who were visiting Sri Lanka for the first time, to experience the beaches and felt that Negombo would be a good choice. Since they had just arrived from overseas, we wanted to ensure they had a memorable stay. 
Based on a glowing recommendation from a couple who had stayed there exactly a year ago, we decided to book PledgeScape in Negombo.

Their feedback described the place as initially underwhelming upon arrival but truly remarkable once inside. Encouraged by this, I went online to make a reservation. The process required me to submit my details for a callback, which I did. Shortly after, a hotel representative contacted me, emphasizing how busy they were and insisting that I confirm the booking by paying at least 50% of the total cost. The half-board rate for two rooms was Rs. 102,000, and I paid a non-refundable advance of Rs. 52,000. Despite this, I felt confident that we had secured a fantastic stay.

With high expectations, we drove to the hotel. As anticipated, the entrance wasn’t grand, but I was immediately put off by the sight of several stray dogs at the entrance. Upon checking in, we were greeted by a male and female staff member who confirmed our reservation. The male staff member then asked the female employee to take our luggage to the rooms, which we declined as it felt inappropriate. We later discovered that she was a trainee who had only started working a few weeks earlier.

We were then informed that the only guest elevator was out of order due to repairs, leaving us with no choice but to use the service elevator. Our journey to the rooms took us past recycling bins, food waste containers, and the hotel’s dirty laundry area—an experience that was both unpleasant and embarrassing.

Upon reaching the reception again, I was asked to settle the full payment before occupying the second room. I complied and received the keys. When I inquired about parking, I was told that the hotel had no private parking and that I should leave my car on the beach behind the hotel. The staff reassured me that “so far, there haven’t been any issues with break-ins,” but when I went to park, I noticed a large sign that read, “Parking at your own risk.”

When we finally entered our rooms, we were further disappointed. The shower knob was broken, and the toilet seat had a noticeable patch, which housekeeping confirmed they could do nothing about. The room’s poor maintenance was evident—walls on the balcony were peeling, and the stained glass obstructed what was supposed to be a scenic sea view.

A minor yet telling moment occurred when our friends requested a napkin or tissue while at the reception. Despite five staff members being present, we were told, “Sorry, we don’t have either.” It was shocking to receive such a response from a place that claims to be in the hospitality industry.

On a positive note, the food was exceptional. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, which, unfortunately, was one of the very few redeeming aspects of our stay.

One notable incident during dinner involved our friend experiencing heat stroke due to dehydration. Fortunately, a gentleman dining at the table next to us quickly stepped in to assist. He instructed the staff to bring water, watermelon juice, and bananas to help her recover. He later introduced himself as the Group General Manager of the hotel. His immediate response and understanding of true hospitality stood out in contrast to the overall service we received.

Later that night, we checked the hotel’s rate on Booking.com and discovered that the bed-and-breakfast rate for a double room was just under Rs. 20,000. That’s when we realized—we had been significantly overcharged.

This experience, regrettably, was deeply disappointing.

Deeply disappointed

We stayed for one night in a twin room. The view over the Indian Ocean is just beautiful. Room and balcony spacious and clean. Beds are very firm however we weren’t too fussed as we were shattered after a long flight. Dinner was lovely (definitely worth half board!) and the breakfast okay. The staff are attentive and helpful. Overall we really enjoyed our night here.

Great rooms, food and service

Where do I start…..
Arrived 2pm from airport and wanted a shower but water was cold so had a cold shower. Went to buffet for eve meal, chicken was cold and other food was low or cold. We had a room with a pool and by morning mosquitos floating around or dead on the floor of pool. Reported it and turns out unusable until the pump was fixed. Bob apologised and offered eve and morning meal as compensation. Had room service that eve as had given up on the hotel buffet, hubbies bolognaise was ok but my herb crust chicken was tough, cold and the rest was unappealing(no sweet potato) I reordered a feta salad ( surely this can’t go wrong) but they sent chicken salad. Re ordered and got a feta salad but with vv small crumbs of feta ( 1.5 hrs later so hungry and ate it) the breakfast was also a sloppy omelette so left it and went somewhere else. They are so close to being a good hotel but attention to detail would work in their favour. FYI 1 night in Negombo is sufficient . Thanks

Disappointing

We came for just one day. It’s a perfect place to spend time, and the person to thank is Gihan, a wonderful guy who knows how to treat guests very well. Thank you for your wonderful service, and unforgettable experience Pledge Scape!!!!!!!!!

The hospitality was wonderful.

The hotel is very clean and calm. Everything was n high standard. I came there with my family from finland for a vacation.  I should thank Mr Gihan for his excellent service provided during our stay. He is fraindy and fully focused on his responsibilities. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and define would visit agai.
