Vietnam Travel Advice

Entry requirements differ by country. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office issues country specific travel advice including Health, Visa and Vaccination requirements.

You can access the FCDO advice for Vietnam at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/vietnam

Entry requirements:

General

  • The authorities in Vietnam set and enforce entry rules. For more specific details it is advised to contact the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK.
  • Make sure to get your passport stamped and check the visa expiry date written in your passport before leaving border control.

Passport validity

  • If visiting Vietnam, your passport must have:
    • an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive
    • at least 2 blank pages
    • no damage – British nationals have been denied entry and exit due to passport damage
    • Renew your passport if you need to.

Visa requirements:

General

  • Visas aren't required for visits up to 45 days for tourism, transit, and business travel (excluding paid or voluntary work).
  • For longer stays or if entering Vietnam for other reasons a visa is required.

e-Visa requirements

  • Tourists staying more than 45 days can apply for an e-visa that allows a 90-day stay and multiple entries. You must exit and re-enter the country to start your e-visa.
  • For longer stays for work, study, business travel or other reasons, meet the Vietnam government’s entry requirements by checking with the Vietnam Immigration Department.
  • If you overstay your visa or work illegally, you may be delayed from travel until you pay a fine, and could be deported and prevented from visiting Vietnam in the future.
  • Non-tourist visas can be extended through the Vietnam Immigration Department.

COVID-19 rules

  • There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Vietnam.
  • If you show symptoms of COVID-19 on arrival, you must notify the health agency at the border gates.

Customs rules

  • There are strict rules regarding goods you can take into or out of Vietnam. Anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty must be declared.
  • Prescription medication greater than 100 US dollars must be declared at customs. For information about restrictions on medication, see Health.
  • If taking cash into or out of Vietnam, you must declare amounts over 15 million Vietnamese dong or 5,000 US dollars.
